When it comes to creating STEM learning spaces and labs that truly support the future of learning, schools need more than furniture. They need foresight, expertise, and a partner who understands education from the inside out.
“In this article, we answer a question that every school leader, architect, and contractor should be asking: What should you really be looking for in an FF&E science lab partner? At Pinnacle, we’ve spent over 20 years refining exactly what that looks like.”
From curriculum-aligned design to MEP coordination, from safety and sustainability to flexibility and futureproofing, we don’t just deliver furniture, we deliver spaces that empower teachers, engage students, and stand the test of time. Here’s what sets the gold standard—and how Pinnacle meets it:
Experience
Why it matters: You want a partner who knows the full lifecycle of a lab- from concept through to installation and has done it time and again.
With over 20 years of hands-on experience in the education sector, we specialise in creating innovative and compliant environments for schools, colleges, and educational environments.
Our extensive portfolio spans across the UK and internationally, supporting both new build and refurbishment projects from concept through to completion.
Guidelines
Why it matters: Science labs must meet strict safety and educational standards because not doing so puts students and staff at risk.
Our designs strictly adhere to all relevant educational and safety guidelines, including the DfE Output Specification, Building Bulletin 80 (BB80), CLEAPSS (Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services) guidance, health and safety legislation, and applicable building regulations.
We ensure that all layouts meet or exceed the recommended and regulatory safe minimum working distances between benches, services, and circulation routes. This ensures that our laboratories are both safe and functional for staff and students, meeting the most up-to-date statutory and recommended best practices.
Understanding of Curriculum & Pedagogy
Why it matters: A space that doesn’t support how science is taught won’t enhance learning—it will hinder it.
Our team understands how science is delivered in real classrooms. We tailor every design to align with subject-specific needs and different teaching methods- whether inquiry-based learning, group work, or front-led demonstrations.
We also understand the need for flexibility in modern classrooms and ensure our spaces can adapt to evolving pedagogies and timetables.
Tailored Design
Why it matters: One-size-fits-all doesn’t work. Great design should reflect your school’s vision, pedagogy, and constraints.
Our specialist design team works collaboratively to produce engaging and functional lab environments that support a variety of teaching methods and adapt to evolving curriculum. We offer a wide range of layout options, including island benches, peninsulas, bespoke shapes, rows, and service pedestals paired with loose tables.
Our designs focus on both aesthetics and functionality and we ensure safe, secure storage for hazardous materials such as chemicals and radioactive sources.
A commitment to Sustainability
Why it matters: Schools are increasingly expected to meet environmental targets—and rightly so.
We are committed to sustainable design. Our Konvolve modular furniture system incorporates recycled steel, and our seating solutions make use of recycled plastics. We also specify FSC-certified timber products wherever possible to support responsible forestry. Sustainability is integrated from product selection to project delivery, aligning with the environmental goals of schools and local authorities.
MEP Coordination
Why it matters: If services aren’t aligned with furniture layouts, functionality suffers—and costs rise.
We recognise the critical importance of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) coordination in science lab environments. We work closely with project teams to ensure that services such as gas, water, and power are correctly integrated with FF&E layouts. We also design and coordinate specialist items including fume cupboards, extract ductwork, and other fixed services, ensuring compliance and functionality from the outset.
Collaborative approach
Why it matters: A successful lab isn’t delivered in isolation—it’s built on shared understanding and joint decision-making.
We work closely with contractors, architects, consultants, and school leadership, maintaining open communication from initial brief to final installation. We believe that early engagement leads to better outcomes, ensuring that every lab meets the brief, is delivered on time, and within budget.
Budget intelligence
Why it matters: Schools need partners who can design within constraints—without compromising quality.
We have extensive knowledge of cost planning and can offer valuable input during the early design stages to ensure that solutions are tailored to the available budget. We provide accurate cost benchmarking across various layout types and configurations, helping clients make informed decisions without compromising on quality or performance.
Built to last
Why it matters: Science environments demand resilience—your lab furniture should keep pace.
All materials and finishes specified in our lab furniture are chosen with science environments in mind. Our furniture is independently tested to BS EN16121 Level 2 for severe contract use. Surfaces are resistant to chemicals, heat, staining, and wear, and everything is backed by a 5-year warranty.
Innovation that Responds to Real Needs
Why it matters: Education evolves. Your spaces should too.
We are constantly evolving our offer to meet the changing needs of schools and colleges. Through feedback from teachers and users, we have developed our own product ranges:
· Konetic – a flexible, pod-based teaching solution designed for agility and collaboration. Konetic – Pinnacle
· Konvolve – a modular benching system that allows for future reconfiguration and expansion. Konvolve – Pinnacle
These innovative solutions are designed to increase flexibility, improve user experience, and support evolving pedagogical requirements.
End-to-End Installation Expertise
Why it matters: Its crucial to not let all the hard work upfront be lost to poor installation at the last hurdle.
Our dedicated installation teams are highly experienced and fully trained to deliver science labs to the highest standard. We manage logistics, site coordination, and final fit-out to ensure every installation is completed safely, efficiently, and in line with project timelines. Our teams are flexible and responsive, working in harmony with other trades and contractors on site.
The Bottom Line
Science labs aren’t just rooms—they’re critical learning environments that shape the way young people engage with science. Schools deserve a partner who understands that.
At Pinnacle, we don’t just meet expectations—we help redefine them.
