West Calder High School's sleek, modern STEM extension was designed to provide senior pupils with a flexible, contemporary environment that bridges the gap between school, higher education, and the workplace.
Tasked with fitting it out, we set out to create a ‘grown-up’, modern, flexible and versatile space using high-quality, sustainable materials.
The Brief
A new STEM extension to:
- Provide extensive fitted storage to support equipment-heavy learning.
- Incorporate semi-private booth seating and collaborative working areas.
- Deliver a modern, flexible environment that could adapt to different teaching and learning styles.
- Create a space that feels mature and professional, reflecting the aspirations of older students preparing for further education or work.
As an adopted design project, we had to replicate and adapt the layouts using its own modular furniture systems, ensuring the final fit-out matched the school’s expectations.
What We Did
Modern layout and furniture
The STEM extension was designed as a flexible, open-plan space, with fitted elements around the perimeter to keep central areas free for loose furniture and adaptable teaching formats.
A highlight was a 12-metre-long wall of fitted storage, three to four times the length of the standard installation. We adapted our modular Teacher Wall system to deliver this bespoke feature, integrating cupboards, shelving, and built-in seating zones. Clever detailing, such as printer alcoves with storage incorporated above, maximised functionality while keeping the look sleek and contemporary.
Booth seating and collaborative spaces
We installed bold turquoise and yellow upholstered booths, providing semi-private zones for small group collaboration, reading, and quiet study. Upholstered with durable fabrics, the booths ensure longevity in high-use environments.
One booth was designed to extend almost to ceiling height, offering greater privacy. To comply with fire regulations, we engineered a discreet slot at the top to allow sprinkler coverage, combining safety with design intent.
Teacher wall and smart use of modular systems
Although not a traditional classroom, we showcased the versatility of our Teacher Wall system. Typically used for teaching zones, the system was reimagined as an expansive storage wall that combined integrated seating, worktops, cupboards, and printer stations, demonstrating the adaptability of our modular solutions.
Comfort and inclusivity
The new environment was deliberately designed to feel more like a university learning hub or modern office than a conventional classroom. This helps older pupils transition towards higher education and the workplace. By offering a variety of working environments from open tables to intimate booths, the extension accommodates different learning styles and promotes student choice.
Safety and sustainability
Safety and sustainability were integral to the project.
Durable fabrics and finishes were specified to withstand heavy daily use.
Upholstery and materials were chosen with eco-credentials where possible, in line with our sustainability commitments.
Booths and fitted elements were engineered to meet fire regulations and accommodate sprinklers.
Modular systems allow for future reconfiguration or replacement, reducing long-term waste.
Project delivery
Delivering the project required a fast turnaround, with our design team producing drawings and models in just one to two weeks. Despite the challenge of adapting another firm’s design, the project ran smoothly, with minimal revisions required on site.
The Result
The STEM extension at West Calder High School now provides:
For students, a variety of zones from booths to open spaces that encourage both collaboration and independent study.
For staff: extensive, fitted storage that reduces clutter and supports resource management. A versatile space that can accommodate different teaching requirements.
For the school, a durable, flexible, and modern environment that reflects its commitment to preparing pupils for future study and careers.
Designer Libby Appleton commented: “It’s very common nowadays to want that open, flexible floor plan with storage along one wall so the inner space can be moved around as much or as little as you want. It looks sleek and modern, but it’s also practical.”
