Front-of-house impact
Ground-floor spaces were treated as key arrival zones, with particular focus on the café and lecture theatre as high-density, front-of-house areas.

Andrew says: “The standout features were the lecture theatre and also the café design on the ground floor. These were very high-density areas and very much front of house, so they were crucial for those first impressions when you walk into the building.”

Social and study spaces
Across the campus, perimeter benching was introduced to accommodate informal study. Teaching rooms and social areas are supported by integrated teapoints, with sink units and base cabinetry coordinated into the architectural layout.

Healthcare and therapy facilities
The healthcare wing was developed as a realistic clinical environment.

Andrew explains: “The healthcare area is a mock-up of an NHS doctor’s surgery, where student nurses and doctors can practise, and from time to time they have real patients going in as they do their qualifications.”

A dedicated therapy room includes a hoist and accessible facilities, supporting inclusive use for students and visitors with additional needs.

Responding to site constraints
Originally planned for the basement, the cycling changing and locker facilities had to be relocated to the second floor following archaeological discoveries beneath the site. The archaeological investigations shaped the construction throughout, and meant that access arrangements changed regularly. Weekly coordination meetings with the contractor enabled us to adapt layouts in real time as parts of the building became unavailable.
