Project Overview

Currie High School is one of the first secondary schools in Scotland built to Passivhaus standards. Designed for 1,000 students and developed in partnership with Kier Construction, Architype and Edinburgh Council, it sets a new benchmark for secondary education: environmentally responsible, adaptable and built for the future.

Pinnacle delivered the FF&E package across all three floors, transforming an ambitious design vision into a fully functioning learning environment.

The Brief

Edinburgh Council’s vision was to create a school that supports every type of learner, adapts to different teaching styles and connects with the wider community.

Working from an interior design scheme developed by Edinburgh Council and Architype, Pinnacle reviewed, developed and coordinated furniture solutions that were practical, durable and aligned with how students and teachers use the spaces every day.

What We Did

Pinnacle supplied and installed the FF&E package across the school, including fixed and loose furniture, specialist teaching equipment and bespoke furniture solutions.

Working closely with the project team, we developed and coordinated furniture solutions that enhanced flexibility, supported different learning styles and brought the overall design intent to life.

Flexible Classrooms
The classrooms were designed to move beyond traditional layouts. Interlocking “Bite” tables allowed teachers and students to quickly transform the space, whether by working independently, or arranged in clusters to collaborate in groups or creating larger discussion areas.

The same room can support all of it without moving a single permanent fixture. It's a simple idea with a significant impact on how a school day flows.

Science and Specialist Learning Spaces
The science laboratories feature teardrop-shaped practical stations with built-in sinks and services, a configuration that puts collaboration at the centre of practical learning. Equipment trays and integrated storage keep resources within reach without cluttering the space.

Home Economics and Design Technology spaces were fitted out with bespoke workbenches and mobile equipment, giving teachers the freedom to reconfigure layouts depending on the lesson. Specialist spaces that work for specialist teaching.

Breakout and Collaborative Spaces
Learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. Throughout the school, informal breakout zones within circulation spaces and specialist areas give students space to collaborate, focus independently or step away from the classroom when they need to.

Booth seating, standalone chairs, enclosed collaboration areas and curved screens within the STEM and  breakout zones give students genuine choice in how and where they work. 

Double-sided mobile screens placed throughout the building add further flexibility, with a pinboard on one side and an interactive screen or whiteboard on the other.

Integrated Support Zone
The Integrated Support Zone was designed to provide students with spaces that support wellbeing, focus and individual learning needs. The zone included sensory rooms, nurture spaces and retreat areas which created opportunities for quiet reflection. We placed the following furniture to adapt to different learning needs, tiered seating provided a flexible setting for presentations, group sessions and informal learning, while wedge tables, wobble stools and varied seating options allowed spaces to be arranged in different ways, supporting small group activities and individual preferences.

Dining and Social Areas
The dining areas were designed to encourage connection and social interaction. Wave-shaped tables and booth seating create smaller gathering points while maintaining a welcoming communal atmosphere.

Library and Bespoke Furniture Solutions
The library combines flexibility with a distinctive design identity.

Bespoke Quattro shelving units with customised display ends were created specifically for the project, providing mobile storage while complementing the wider interior scheme.

Sculptural seating features add character to the space, creating an environment where students can read, research and spend time.

Currie High School is a learning environment designed around the needs of modern education.

Through adaptable furniture, specialist equipment and bespoke solutions, Pinnacle helped deliver spaces that support collaboration, independence and wellbeing.

The result is a sustainable, inclusive and future-ready school built to evolve with its students and community.
